"Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu is not a 100%, he's been hobbled by injures for most of March and April and he has struggled to stay in front of 76ers forward Andre Iguodala in the opening game of the NBA Playoffs as a result.
Regardless of his health, Hedo said yesterday that he is still leaning towards opting out of his current contract and hitting the free agent market in July. Sources close to the situation say initial concepts have been exchanged with Turkoglu's camp looking for a $10 million per year deal, while the Magic are thinking something closer to what Turkoglu makes now - $7 million and simply giving him the 4 or 5 years of security he claims to be seeking.
"If I'm coming out, I'm coming out for one reason — to secure myself, my family," explained Turkoglu to Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel. "Not wait for the NBA lockout and stuff. The only reason I'm making that decision — if I decided that — is not to worry about another year."
"Listen, the market is going to be bad, anyway, this year or the next year. I'm just thinking about doing my best for this team and go from there."
"I just don't want to go through this stuff again and have to worry about injuries and lockouts and other stuff ... and just have a clear mind. Just knowing that I'm secure for another four or five years and just focus on my game."
"I want to stay here. This is how I become Turkoglu," Hedo said. "The organization gave me an opportunity and has been good to me. But I always say this: It has to be on both sides, not just my side."
The odds the Magic willfully make sweeping changes to a team that won 59 games without All-Star Jameer Nelson is unlikely, but the Magic are up against next season's projected Luxury Tax so keeping Turkoglu at a crazy deal seems unlikely. Sources close to the club said keeping Turk was more likely than not, it would simply be up to Magic GM Otis Smith to negotiate a reasonable deal"
